WHAT IS 2ND LIVE?

2ND LIVE is an ongoing programme of activity that aims to explore the potential of live performance in the Second Life® world. It hosts a website, a virtual community group of avatars and an island (256 x 256 virtual metres in size).

2ND LIVE attempts to answer the following questions through a programme of practical projects, professional development opportunities for artists, conference papers and articles:
• what can be learnt through the transference of Real Life practices into a Second Life context?
• how can we construct space and event in order to exploit the potential of the virtual environment, rather than simply mimicing everyday dynamics?

SLaaristokaupunki was commissioned for ANTI Festival, Kuopio, Finland (September 2009).

» SLaaristokaupunki (Stephen Hodge)

2ND LIVE was established in order to facilitate the Phoenix Scratch in SL programme (throughout 2007 and 2008), which comprised four new commissioned works and a series of events with open-calls for artists to try out new performance experiments. Phoenix Scratch in SL was produced by Exeter Phoenix and supported by Arts Council England (Lottery Funded). Commissioned works were:

» #1: Third Life (Richard DeDomenici)

» #2: Viral Duets (Niki McCretton)

» #3: A Study in Reflexive Architecture (Jon Brouchoud)

» #4: The Second Death of Caspar Helendale (Jessica Curry & Dan Pinchbeck)

The Second Death of Caspar Helendale was selected by the Royal Opera House (UK) and was performed with live music as part of the Firsts 09 season on 27-28 November 2009.
